Fishing Info

From our earliest ancestors and the Cherokee Native Americans in Eastern Tennessee to the pioneers who settled in the mountains and Gatlinburg and our visitors to the Smokies today, fishing has been a fixture of life in Southern Appalachia and continues on to this day.

On this page, you'll find all the information you need to get started on a great fishing vacation in the Smokies! Required Information, locations, kinds of fish you'll find... we'll get you started right!

License Information (as found in the 2012 Tennessee Fishing Guide):

Resident Licenses can be purchased by:

  • Persons who possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or Tennessee State ID.
  • Persons who have lived in Tennessee for 90 consecutive days with the intent of making Tennessee a permanent place of residence. Proof of residency required.
  • Military personnel on active duty in the state of Tennessee and their immediate families who reside with them.
  • Students who are enrolled in a Tennessee school or college for at least 6 months. Must possess Student ID
  • Persons 12 years and younger are not required to have a license, though a permit may be required.

A Social Security number is required to purchase a Tennessee hunting or fishing license.

Different licenses exist for residents and nonresidents and apply in terms of how many days you hope to fish and whether or not you are fishing for trout. Nonresidents under 12 do not need a fishing license.

The Possession Limit is twice the daily creel limit. You may not have more than the daily creel limit with you while in the field. You can find the creel limits per species here: - Page 10

A complete detailed account of fishing regulations can also be found at that same link with yearly additions.
